What is a Public Benefit Organization (PBO)?
A Public Benefit Organization (PBO) in South Africa is a tax-exempt status granted by SARS to entities focused on public benefit activities, like welfare and education. PBOs can issue Section 18A certificates, enabling donor tax deductions. To qualify, PBOs must register with SARS and, often, as a legal entity (like an NPC) with CIPC. They are subject to strict SARS regulations and must file annual returns to keep their tax-exempt status, ensuring they remain dedicated to their defined public benefit purposes.

Why support the Cecilia Foundation PBO?
Music has a powerful impact on human development, benefiting the mind, emotions, and body at every stage of life. Learning music strengthens memory, language, and math skills, and even improves problem-solving. It also builds social skills, as playing in groups teaches teamwork, empathy, and communication. Music helps with mental health too – it reduces stress, boosts mood, and offers an emotional outlet, building resilience. Practicing an instrument builds discipline and confidence, which can improve self-esteem. For older adults, music may delay memory loss and boost social connection, reducing loneliness. Physically, singing and playing instruments improve coordination, motor skills, and even core strength.
In short, music enriches our brains, supports emotional health, and strengthens social bonds, making it an incredible tool for well-being at any age.
Since its inception, the Cecilia Foundation PBO has provided music education and therapy to hundreds of ground-phase learners in schools that lack music teachers. The organization also offers instrument instruction to children and adults who cannot afford it. Cecilia Foundation supplies and maintains a variety of instruments, including wind, percussion, and string instruments, and facilitates access to qualified tutors in a conducive environment for music sessions. A portion of the sales from Cecilia and Wind Band wines serves as a foundational source of funding for the Cecilia Foundation.
