OUR WINES

CECILIA

The Cecilia range is crafted from vineyards chosen for their distinctive qualities. These vineyards span a variety of climates, soils, and elevations, each suited to the varietal. The majority are old bush vine vineyards, dry-farmed to encourage deep root systems, which naturally regulate growth and concentrate flavors. The result is a collection of wines that exhibit elegance, fine structure, and a true sense of place.

The absence of wire or trellis systems aligns with a philosophy of minimal intervention in the winemaking process and sustainability. Additionally, the practice of dry farming further reduces external influence, allowing the grapes to develop based on the natural growth of the vine and the unaltered conditions of their physical environment.

In line with this approach, oak treatment is applied sparingly, used only to help the wines settle and integrate, rather than to impart oak flavors or toasty characteristics.

OLD VINE PINOTAGE

The bush vines used for Cecilia Pinotage are located in two vineyards in the Citrusdal Mountain Wine of Origin. One vineyard is located on the northern edge of the Skurfberg plateau and the second one is in Piekenierskloof, to the south of Citrusdal Mountain. The altitude of the two vineyards are 400 and 620 meters respectively and both are over 40 years old. The sandy topsoil, combined with excellent drainage in the subsoil, provides ideal growing conditions. The relatively light soils and the vines’ old age result in smaller yields at harvest, producing concentrated grapes that produce wines of remarkable depth and complexity. Year after year, the richness of flavor and the refined quality of the tannins are truly impressive, showcasing the consistency and exceptional character of this high-quality terroir. Despite the challenges, these unique vines continue to deliver extraordinary wines, highlighting their irreplaceable value.

SYRAH

The Cecilia Syrah is crafted from a vineyard near the quaint town of Darling, located about twenty kilometers from the cool Atlantic coast. The vines thrive in deep, red loam soils derived from granite, known for their excellent water-holding capacity. This, combined with daily ocean breezes, fosters optimal ripening and enhances flavour complexity. Similar to the Pinotage, these bush vines produce grapes with intense colour and rich concentration. This intensity is evident in the wine’s deep, opaque hue and its complex layers of flavour, evoking the character of northern Rhône Syrah.

OLD VINE CHENIN BLANC

Cecilia Chenin Blanc is vinified from a bush vine vineyard planted in 1962 on the Piekenierskloof plateau, rooted in sandy loam soils. These ungrafted vines were recently part of a research study by Interloire in France, which revealed that some of South Africa’s old Chenin selections, like this one, are now extinct in France. This vineyard also tested negative for common viruses found in South African vineyards, highlighting its exceptional genetic material. Piekenierskloof’s elevation ensures cooling evening temperatures during the growing season. This aids in preserving the grapes’ natural acidity and promotes a vibrant stone fruit character in the final wine.
